Frequently Asked Questions

The British Standard BS 5839 breaks systems down based on the level of protection. Our Certivest engineers will help you choose the right one:

Grade D1/D2 (Residential): The standard for most London rentals. These are mains-powered alarms with a battery backup.

Grade A (High-Risk/Large Residential): A full system with a central control panel, detectors, and manual call points (the “break glass” units).

Category L (Life Protection): * L1: Detectors in every room (maximum protection).
L3: Detectors on escape routes and rooms opening onto them (standard for London offices).
L4: Detectors on escape routes only.

Under the latest BS 5839-1:2025 recommendations, there is a stronger preference for automatic optical smoke detection in sleeping areas rather than just heat detectors, to provide the fastest possible response to smoldering fires.

Wired: Extremely reliable and lower long-term maintenance costs. Best for new builds or major renovations.

Wireless: Faster to install with no “chasing” into walls. Ideal for London’s historic or listed buildings where we want to avoid decorative damage.

At Certivest, we prioritize cleanliness. If we are installing a wired system in a finished home, we use discreet trunking or specialized “fishing” techniques to minimize disruption. Wireless systems leave virtually no mess at all.

Yes. For all residential rentals in London, you must have at least one working smoke alarm on every story used as living accommodation. Since 2022, you also need a Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance (like a boiler or wood burner).

Upon completion, Certivest London provides:
Installation Certificate: Proving the system was put in correctly.
Commissioning Certificate: Proving the system was tested and works as intended.
User Logbook: For you to record your mandatory weekly tests.
